A professional headshot portrait is an advertisement for promoting your brand which of course is you! Creating the right image for the individuals or potential clients who may not know you yet should be given some thought. Just as an actor must be convincing in their role, a professional portrait must convey the same for an individual.
Who is your audience or market?
Your professional headshot for LinkedIn may differ from that used in a medical or law journal article. For LinkedIn, most executive portraits should be professional friendly, since being well liked by all is the goal. The portrait below is what I call classic-contemporary portrait style. For actors, models and some creatives casual attire is fine, but in most instances dressing to fit the part is best.

Being featured in a medical or law journal article for instance is a different audience and purpose than that for LinkedIn. A more dramatic or serious portrait may be warranted to enhance credibility. The portrait on the left is called my "character style" signature portrait. I use a special lighting technique that was also used for movie stars in the "Golden Age of Hollywood in the 1940's." Do you notice the differences in these portrait styles besides the smile? In my opinion the "Character Style" portrait is dramatic, adds sophistication, and leaves more to the imagination as to guessing his personality. If he were to write an article or book, which portrait style might you choose? It would depend on the topic, subject and audience wouldn't it?
